What Are Some Factors That Trigger Headaches?

on Friday, November 30, 2012

Headaches are no fun and if you suffer from them, most likely you've tried different types of remedies to "fix" the problem. Whether you've tried medications, natural remedies or other options like massage therapy or acupuncture: it all depends on how you view total body health. If you have the perspective that medicine is the answer, then you're not going to venture into trying holistic or home remedies to deal with the health issues. If you're leaning towards holistic remedies, you'll be extremely interested in using healthy remedies to actually "fix" the issues.

Medicine works in many instances, but it doesn't always "cure" the problem. For example, taking medicine for a headache eases the pain and tension in your head, but it won't prevent you from getting headaches again in the future. It is vitally important to get to the root of the problem and find out what is causing the headaches. If you don't know what is causing the pain, how can you learn how to prevent the pain from coming again and again? It's an impossible cycle.

If you are a migraine sufferer, most likely you've taken over the counter medicines like Excedrin for migraines. This product has caffeine in it. Caffeine works well to relieve the tension in your head from migraines; however, having too much caffeine in your body is not good for your heart. Once you start using caffeine to alleviate your pain, you're going to crave the caffeine again. If you want to do the right thing for your body, then taking the healthy alternative is the answer.

If you start adding magnesium to your diet, that will help prevent headaches. Magnesium is a natural way to alleviate your headaches compared to taking medicine with caffeine. However, if you take more foods with magnesium or supplements, you need to counteract the effects (diarrhea) with also taking added calcium in your diet. You can take multi-vitamins with a good amount of magnesium and calcium and most of your headaches will be prevented-except possibly when the weather has been extremely humid or a high pressure storm system has come into the area.

So what are some factors in triggering headaches are? Some of those factors are: not eating enough, lack of sleep, tension, dehydration, too much caffeine (a little bit helps in preventing headaches and too much causes them), inactivity and sleep deprivation. In addition to adding magnesium supplements to your daily diet, you should also start eating foods rich in magnesium to help prevent headaches. So what are foods to eat-spinach, tofu, oat bran, barley, fish, olive oil, white beans, sunflower and pumpkin seeds. What foods should you avoid-red wine, chocolate, beer, aged cheese and processed meats like pepperoni and salami etc.

If you are interested in taking herbal supplements as well which alleviate headaches and promote overall brain health, you should take the following herbal therapies-Valerian, Ginkgo biloba, Kava kava, Ginger and Feverfew, which are often used in the management of migraine symptoms.
